Bonding over Mascots

Why does the NCAA have an issue with mascots or why are some NCAA schools changing their mascots? This article’s purpose is definitely to inform people why the NCAA is setting out to change the mascots of some collegiate schools across the nation. I believe he wants to address the issue because of the recent edict that was released by the NCAA. The research in the article is definitely well thought out. I thought that the amount of interviews the author collected was definitely helping his ethos. It was very impressive that the author contacted the president of the NCAA to find out the right facts about why the change is happening. Another benefit to his paper was his interview with some actual Native Americans. The author was able to see how the mascot’s name and previous names affect the group that wants to see the change. I really liked the interviews because it shows the amount of time and effort that the author put into his paper. It really just gives a good impression on how much the author really cares about this topic.

Google makes us stupider...

I Believe Carr makes a very good argument on the fact that Google may be making us stupid. Throughout the article, she constantly is using a comparison of times. There is a flow between the introduction of books to the printing press to the modern day computer. She really tries to make the reader understand that no matter what the technology of each time period, humans have slowly began to loose the sense to think. Unfortunately, I strongly disagree with the articles premises. I believe that the internet is actually making us a group of smarter and more knowledgeable peoples. With more advances in technology and medicines, people can now go onto CNN's website and read about the advances that are happening across the world. Previously, people would have to wait months before any type of information would be able to travel to the United States. Wikipedia, one of the world's most visited sites, has new information up daily for readers to enjoy and particularly learn about. Hyperlinks are definitely an advantage for making humans smarter. Yes, people can now easily click a link and go to a new page, but people can now travel pages upon pages of new information and learn about things that weren't previously available.
